How AC Systems Work

Heating is fairly simple, and works much like a radiator does. It draws hot coolant from the engine and into a small heater core. From there, a fan blows outside air over the core's fins, sending the warm air through the vents and into your cabin.

The AC system, though, is more involved. First, a compressor pressurizes the refrigerant and changes it to a hot gas. A condenser cools that gas, turning it to a liquid. The liquid then passes through an expansion valve, where it gets converted into a low-pressure gas. Lastly, an evaporator uses a fan to quickly cool the gas down. That produces the cool air that flow through the ducts and into the cabin.

At some point, though, your HVAC system can begin to have problems. Seals can weaken. Hoses can become too brittle. If anything goes bad with yours, your comfort is at risk.
